Driving from springs in a cliff almost 200 m high overlooking the plain, calcite-laden waters have created at Pamukkale (Cotton Palace) an unreal landscape, made up of mineral deposits, petrified waterfalls and a series of terraced basins. A dramatic hillside location consisting of hot springs and travertine terraces, the stunning natural phenomenon of Pamukkale has been used as a spa for thousands of years.
At the end of the 2nd century B.C. the dynasty of the Attalids, the kings of Pergamon established the thermal spa of Hierapolis. The ruins of the tombs, Domitian gate, temples, Roman theatre, Temple of Apollo, Colonnaded Street can be seen at the site.
Pamukkale ,is called the cotton castle by literal translation of the word ‘Pamukkale’ in Turkish. It's called the cotton castle because of the similarities that these white mountain slopes have with the cotton plantations .Pamukkale is a tourist attraction. It is recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Site together with Hierapolis. Hierapolis-Pamukkale was made UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988.
